Legal AI Readiness Baseline

The Maturity Grid (MAT-01) tells the firm where it sits today. The Readiness Assessment Scorecard tells the firm where it's currently capable of going next. The Module produces the structured 5-axis readiness snapshot — leadership, data, talent, governance, vendor — that informs which capabilities the firm can actually deploy this quarter without disproportionate operational risk. Without a readiness pass, ambition drifts from capability. Methodology v2026.1.

Executive Summary

The Legal AI Readiness Assessment Scorecard (MAT-02) is the primary diagnostic for legal departments beginning or scaling AI transformation. It evaluates maturity across all eight pillars of the Legal AI Operating System: strategy, data and infrastructure, talent and change, governance and defensible AI, use cases and execution, vendor and technology, maturity mapping, and sustaining long-term value. Using a 0–5 scoring scale and pillar-specific weightings, MAT-02 produces an overall readiness score, identifies priority gaps, and maps the function onto the MAT-01 2D maturity grid (Adoption Stage × Augmentation Sophistication). The scorecard is designed for quarterly use: a full baseline at programme inception, focused pillar re-assessments to track progress, and an annual re-baseline. Outputs feed directly into STR-02 strategic roadmap design, GOV-01 governance deployment, and the Defensibility Posture Statement (DPS) baseline. MAT-02 also cross-walks to the 2026 Risk Taxonomy, ensuring coverage of hallucination, privilege, bias, privacy, supply chain, shadow AI, regulatory drift, IP, and operational resilience risks.

Defensibility Evidence Produced

Completed MAT-02 assessment documentation — including 8-pillar scored results with evidence, MAT-01 grid position derivation, Pillar 4 Governance Maturity score as DPS baseline, and priority gap analysis — constitutes initial DPS baseline evidence across all four Advanta lenses

1. Purpose and Position in the Ecosystem

MAT-02 is the canonical Legal AI Readiness Assessment Scorecard. It is used to:

  • Establish a quantified baseline of AI maturity across all eight Legal AI OS pillars.
  • Capture evidence-backed scores using a 0–5 scale and pillar weightings.
  • Map the legal function’s position on the MAT-01 2D grid (Adoption Stage × Augmentation Sophistication).
  • Feed STR-02 strategic roadmap design and GOV-01 governance deployment.
  • Provide initial DPS (Defensibility Posture Statement) baseline evidence.

Ecosystem flow: MAT-02 → MAT-01 → STR-02 → GOV-01 → DPS.

Diagnostic Relevance

Running the Readiness Assessment Scorecard strengthens the Sophistication lens — expected Band progression: Foundational → Operational.

Confidence: high

Key Takeaways

  • Establish a quantified baseline of Legal AI maturity across all eight pillars.

  • Apply a consistent 0–5 scoring model with pillar weightings to derive an overall readiness score.

  • Map the legal function’s position on the MAT-01 2D grid (Adoption Stage × Augmentation Sophistication).

  • Identify and prioritise maturity gaps that feed directly into the STR-02 strategic roadmap.

  • Generate DPS-grade defensibility evidence, especially for governance and risk (Pillar 4).

  • Use quarterly reassessments to track progress and adjust AI strategy and investment.

  • Align Legal AI readiness with ISO 42001, NIST AI RMF, EU AI Act, and ABA guidance.

Where this Module lives

The Readiness Assessment Scorecard sits between maturity diagnosis (MAT-01) and gap remediation (MAT-03). It consumes the maturity baseline and produces the deployability snapshot that informs the AI Task Force's quarterly priority decisions (STR-07). The Module produces DE-2 (Methodology transparency) and DE-3 (Evidence framework) records into the DPS. Without it, capability planning runs on optimism.

Advisory

When this Module sits inside a Programme.

Modules are operated in-house by GC and Legal Operations teams. When the capability transformation is multi-Pillar — or when the regulator timeline tightens — Advanta operates the canonical Module sequence as a Programme.
